THE KITCHEN OF MIMÌ AT THE RAILWAY
Mimì alla Ferrovia is a piece of history of the city of Naples.
The restaurant was in fact born in 1943 at the behest of a young married couple, Ida ed Emilio Giugliano (known as Mimi).
The spouses had two goals: "To offer anyone who enters the best flavors that can be put on a plate and the warmest welcome that can be left in the soul".
Since, the place has always been in the hands of the Giugliano family, passing through the management of the two homonymous cousins Michele and Michele up to their sons Salvatore today (in cucina) and Ida (communication), the new generation.
As a business for over fifty years, this year the restaurant was registered in the Special Register of Historic Brands of National Interest, being able to use the logo of Historical Brand.
Mercoledì 1 December the Giugliano family presented the book Mimì's cuisine at the Railway published by Mondadori, which collects the history and recipes of the house.
Numerous and deeply felt the interventions of the meeting, moderated by the journalist Luciano Pignataro.
Unable to be physically present in Naples, lo chef Heinz Beck sent a video greeting.
The sociologist Domenico De Masi underlined the importance of the mood, of the atmosphere in the Mimì restaurant. An atmosphere of authenticity, a unicum for the city of Naples, for which we must be grateful as customers and as Neapolitans.
Alfonso Iaccarino, owner of the restaurant Don Alfonso 1890 Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi, highlighted the points of contact between the Iaccarino and the Giugliano: common values such as family, generations, il territorio.
The two cousins Michele Giugliano wanted to emphasize the importance of teamwork, while Ida Giugliano told how fundamental it was (and perhaps little known) the role of grandmother Ida, of which it is proud to bear the name.
An illustrious neighbor, Ciro Coccia, owner of the Fortuna pizzeria (just reopened after the forced stop due to the Covid emergency), he came by to say hello and offered some samples for the guests.
After the presentation, the tasting of some dishes in the book was proposed.
Mimì's signature dish is definitely the Stuffed pepper ('Mbuttunato, for us Neapolitans).
Traditional but with a touch of innovation, the Taco Bao with Genoese-style beef stew and the crispy Alice, provola, pumpkin and wasabi, as well as the Octopus Potatoes and Kimchi. The casing can change (the Taco Bao), ingredients or preparations can be added (wasabi, kimchi), but certainly the substance and the goodness that have always distinguished Mimì's cuisine do not change.
The chickpea and cod pasta is very comfortable, dense (indeed "apt") as we Neapolitans like.
The menu also features classics such as pasta with potatoes and provola, the Neapolitan ragù, the fried cod.
Mimì alla Ferrovia is the timeless place for anyone looking for authenticity, simplicity and hospitality.
