ZANNINI WINERY AND CAMPIERTI FARM
Siamo a Falciano del Massico, in the heart of Ager Falernus, enclosed to the north by Mount Massico, to the South West of the Savone river, to the east from the slopes of the Roccamonfina volcano and about six km from the sea.
And it is precisely its pedoclimatic conditions that made it become a place of wine starting from the last years of the 3rd century BC., but it will only be in the second half of the 2nd century BC. that Falerno became a quality product, thanks to the new oenological techniques of the Romans developed after the defeat of Carthage. Becoming the most loved wine by the Romans.
It was precisely during the war of Carthage that the god Bacchus was disturbed by Silio Italico who so quoted: "Bacchus, in disguise, he asked old Falerno for hospitality; moved by his generosity, he gave birth to lush vines on the slopes of Monte Massico”.
Stories and discoveries of a luxuriant Rome take place in the family vineyards that surround the farm; we are guests of Zannini family owner of Campierti farmhouse.
Wine producers since 1800, the bond of Domenico Zannini and his father Carlo with the territory has deep and distant roots in time. And he is the archaeologist Ugo Zannini to accompany us in the story and history of a territory that starts from far away and which describes a product that has spanned centuries, amphorae, barrels… up to our glasses. We are in the DOP of Falerno, slope particularly and historically devoted to Primitivo as history tells us, which sees Aglianico taking over only in the 1950s. Precisely the Primitivo that dominates these rows accompanied by Aglianico and Camaiola, called the Barbera in this area.
THE WINES OF CANTINA ZANNINI
There are three labels from Cantina Zannini, let's start with a glass of Burning Roccamonfina IGP, blend of the three vines, 60% Primitive, 32% Aglianico, 8% Camaiola; ruby red in colour, a nose rich in aromas of red fruit and the sip is full and soft with well-structured tannins; we tasted it combined with the potato pie stuffed with broccoli and local sausage.
Sì, because Masseria Campierti is a farmhouse, also features 4 rooms to enjoy a splendid “bed” experience & wine”.
Second label we have tasted in two years is Campierti Falerno del Massico primitivo DOP, from grapes 100% primitive; a ruby red wine, an intoxicating nose with a strong hint of red fruit, on the palate it is a full-bodied wine with soft and smooth tannins that balance the alcohol well. Matched the year 2020 to an excellent Risotto al Falerno and the 2019 to Traditional ragù... taste, flavor and harmony.
The cuisine and gastronomic proposals are entrusted to the expert hands of the cook Silvana Petrarca.
We continue with Cuore Reale di Vitello al Falerno, a true delicacy combined with the third label of the Zannini winery, Falerno del Massico Riserva Campierti DOP, 2017. It's a whirlwind of taste and flavour, one bite leads to another which amiably embraces the glass of wine.
We finish with the shortcrust pastry with cream and black cherries, staying in the area strictly, it could only be combined with an Elixir Falernum from Distilleria Petrone.
In the end we return enriched with history, culture, taste and flavour.
